for utilising Mr. King's good knowledge of colloquial
Chinese in the New Territory. The second paragraph of his
letter shows in what manner Mr. King has been employed
there during the past few months, and the Government
Assessor reports that he has performed his duties satisfactorily.
I have therefore the honour to recommend
that Mr. King's salary be augmented in the following
manner that he receive an increase of $180 per annum in
respect of his work in the New Territory, besides actual
travelling expenses, and a further addition of $200 per
annum in respect of additional duties in connection with
his post in the Public Works Department. These increases
will bring his total emoluments up to $2000 per annum,
which is the sum asked for in his letter.
